Life update: Two days left of work!

I only have two days left of work and I'm filled with totally mixed feelings.

Back in July last year, I decided that the best way to spend my 'year out' would be to do a range of different internships in order to gain real work experience while I saved for travelling, and to help me decide the kind of job I want. (This also gave me quite a good line for telling my lecturers/family/friends etc rather than "I don't really know what I'm doing..." 👀)

Honestly, I thought I'd smashed it 💪. This year would be a breeze, I'd work a month or so at a handful of companies and come out the other side with money to travel and also knowing exactly what job was right for me 💅

The year was off to a good start. In August, I was lucky to be offered a great one-month internship an ed-tech start up in London. Fast forward to now, and I'm just about to finish there.

Yep, that's right, the same internship that I started 7 months ago... oops

As my first contract came to an end, I had applied for some other internships and was ready to move on. I got offered a role at a PR company in London. Then my company offered to extend my contract by 3 months - a better paid job in a company I already knew with a great atmosphere? Sure! So I stayed.

In January, I was back in the same situation. Again with another internship on the table (this time in Events Management). It didn't pay as well, and this one meant longer days of travel. At this point I had my trip booked (flying out on April 4th!!) so wanted something that would last me until then and the role was only a month, so I was a bit worried about having 2 months with nothing to do before I went away. I told my company I was leaving, and yet again they offered me a further 3 months (am I catch, or what?! Kidding...)

I'm really lucky to have worked with different people in the company and in different roles over the 7 months, so I still gained experience in Customer Relations, Sales, Events Management, and Communications. The people are lovely, the commute wasn't too bad, and I was given lots of responsibility. Plus, because it was still technically an internship, they were quite flexible with holiday (I just didn't get paid for days I didn't work).

If I hadn't had a trip away booked, then I think maybe I would have taken the other roles I applied for, and played it a bit more by ear. But I certainly don't regret staying in this role, I've had a great time and learnt a lot. I guess it's all about doing what suits you at the time, and not stressing too much about the future (especially if you don't have a plan, like me!)

Sorry for the long post! I think it's so important to hear about how people deal with life post-uni, and that it's okay not to have everything mapped out for your future. I know it would have helped me feel less stressed.

Thanks for reading! Let me know if you want any tips on finding internships and applying for them.
