On Sunday, I moved out of my boyfriend's flat and back to my parent's house (don't worry, not a break up, just a change of base for me while I go travelling/sort my life out!). Since then I have been working on what I thought would be an easy task and has turned out to be a mammoth one...
As I'm leaving in a week (SO excited!) for my trip to Malaysia and Australia, I've had to unpack everything I brought home to be able to sort through everything to then re-pack for travelling. For the first few days I've been home, more or less all I'd done was dump everything on my bedroom floor... 🤷
It was kind of logical. I felt like if I could see everything, then I could sort through it without forgetting stuff or having to come back to something later. Plus, I love watching wardrobe clearouts/updates/reorganising videos on youtube, and this is often where they start!
BUT it also made my room look like a bombsite. A total and complete mess.
So I spent the FULL day yesterday tidying and re-organising. It was tiring but omg was it worth it. I've now got two HUGE bags of clothes that I haven't worn in ages - these no doubt will be rummaged through by my sisters before the remains go to a charity shop. I found a few things still brand new with labels, so they're going on ebay. And I've got so much more space in my wardrobes! Here's the process I went through:

I found a few things still brand new with labels, so they're going on ebay. And I've got so much more space in my wardrobes! Here's the process I went through:
1) Take everything out
I'm lucky to have quite a big bedroom at home, the same room that I've had for the past 12 years. This is great, but does mean that I've accumulated quite a lot of stuff! I'm quite good at throwing away clothes if they're broken or tattered, but anything that is just "not my style" anymore tends to sit at the back of my wardrobe for a while (a long while). Today, I thought enough is enough. Every last little thing in my wardrobes came out (down to underwear!) and I was ruthless, chucking out anything if I couldn't remember the last time I wore it.2) Sort into piles, and more piles
First of all, I took everything out and sorted it into tops, trousers, jumpers etc. Then I went through each of these piles and made a yes, no, and maybe pile. This is the bit that took me the longest. Does it still fit me? Do I have things that go with it? Is it comfortable? How old is it? Will I wear it again? I had lots of questions and managed to answer most of them myself by taking the first answer that came to mind - no "ooh but I might wear it next autumn if I buy the right jeans". If there's doubt, there's no doubt (wise words from my Dad). And for anything I had a bit more trouble with I asked for advice from my mum and my sisters, because they don't hold back!3) Refill the wardrobes
This was a chance to reorganise my clothes and make a bit more sense of my wardrobes. To start, I put all my really wintery items at the top of my wardrobe, where they're not so accessible, as I'm hoping I won't need them for a while! All other items were hung up on (mostly) matching hangers, and arranged in colour order. Turns out a lot of my clothes are grey/white/cream/pink!4) Make some lists
If you can't already tell, I'm quite a fan of doing things systematically (read: "nerd"). I needed to unpack before I could repack for my trip, and unpacking seemed like a great opportunity to sort through all my clothes. After I'd refilled my wardrobe, the next thing I did was make some lists:
- Clothes to replace - there were some items I threw away that I would like to have kept, but that were a bit old or ruined in some way. To save the heartbreak of saying goodbye to these items, I wrote down what they were and will be treating myself to updated versions! Some examples are my favourite white top (now practically see through it's been worn so much) and my old blue jeans (which have slightly stretched out of shape)
- My style - it might seem silly to some people to need to write this down, but putting into words the things I have a lot of (because I really like the style or wear a lot) and main colours of my wardrobe means that I properly thought about what I like and dislike. This for me was going from "white tops" to "white blouses or camis, no v-necks, not cotton/jersey materials" and so on
- Wishlist - this is always something each girl has in the back of their mind! Time spent scrolling through Instragram and Pinterest means I'm constantly seeing items I'd like to own. After such a long day of trying things on and throwing things away, I thought I'd treat myself to thinking of a few things that I now have the space for! Not to mention a few items I need, e.g. a cute spring coat!
This whole process really helped me see more clearly the items that I already own, and made me think more about what "my style" really is, which should help me with shopping in the future. The plan is to only buy clothes that will easily slot into my already existing wardrobe! Let's see how that works out...
